Melaleuca Boardwalk

Members of the melaleuca genus of plants can grow under a range of conditions, and many tolerate wet or saline conditions. Several are known as “paperbarks” due to the very thin layers of paper-like bark.

In June 1984 the Coffs Harbour Rotary Club constructed a boardwalk through a forest of paperbarks near the rainforest, a beautiful quiet section of the Garden.
Lizards and birds abound, and there is plenty to see for the visitor who stays quietly on the boardwalk, including the occasional red-bellied black snake or even a carpet python.
The broad leafed paperbarks, Melaleuca quinquenervia , are salt tolerant, and also occur along the creek bank where fresh water seeps into the creek. They were an important tree for the aboriginal peoples.
